IC 2177 would not normally be a challenging target, but at my imaging site, its highest elevation is only 37 degrees. Despite the "soft" seeing at this elevation, as well as my image scale of only 3.26 arcsec/pixel, there is still a good amount of detail that can be observed in this image.

Two open star clusters are also visible in the image, NGC 2335 (top) + NGC 2343 (left of center). Astronomers catalog the nebula as IC 2177. This cosmic cloud is one of many sites of star formation within the Milky Way galaxy. It is located 3,800 light-years away from Earth, inside the Orion spur -- the same partial spiral arm of the Milky Way where our solar system is located. The nebula is nearly 240 light-years across.

IC 2177 lies in the constellation Monoceros, though its actual location puts it very close to Canis Major (where Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, lies). I have not tried to view IC 2177 visually, as it is a large, faint and diffuse object.

The name Seagull Nebula is sometimes applied by amateur astronomers to this emission region, although it more properly includes the neighbouring regions of star clusters, dust clouds and reflection nebulae. This latter region includes the open clusters NGC 2335 and NGC 2343. NGC 2327 is located in IC 2177.

This nebula was discovered by Welsh amateur astronomer Isaac Roberts and was described by him as "pretty bright, extremely large, irregularly round, very diffuse." IC 2177 – Seagull. Object: The Seagull Nebula, aka IC 2177, spreads its wings with a span of over 100 light-years and resembles a seagull in flight. This cloud of gas and dust is located about 3700 light-years away from Earth. The Seagull Nebula lies just on the border between the constellations of Monoceros (The Unicorn) and Canis Major (The Great Dog) and is close to Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky.
